The Reverent Space of Home

"From our house is our corner of the world" – Gaston Bachelard

A Tibetan nomad's way of life is seasonal, yet always grounded by the reverent space of home. In the summer months, the traditional tent is where nomad’s reside and rest, at its centre a hearth and earthen stove where evening meals are cooked and around which stories are told, rebuilt with every move. During autumn, sheep and yak are moved to pastures closer to the more permanent winter dwelling, a cosy space with a heated khang and felted mats where families gather, relax and see in the new year and all it brings. This is the inspiration behind our Autumn Winter Home collection for 2024.

The deconstructed grid patterns of the Nomad Dense Boiled Rows Throw (above) and Overfelt Husk Blanket (below) both nod to the glass-fronted, grid-like facades that welcome you into the Tibetan home, exposing selected warp and weft threads in their pre-woven state.

References to nomad's summer homes are found in the Nomad Dense Marmot Blanket – with dark heavyweight fringing cut in varying lengths – reminiscent of a black bagu tent, made from strips of woven tsipa – the long, rough yak hair that hangs down the sides of the animal – home to nomads for thousands of years.

The Nomad Dense Boiled Tent Blanket features woven cord hand-stitched across all four edges – thicker along the selvedge and narrower at top and bottom. The cords hang loosely from each corner, akin to the details found adorning the exterior of the tents found across the plateau.

Blankets, cushions and throws feature raw and irregular stepped edges, elongated fringing and softly rugged textures, using many zero-waste processes. Compositions of yak khullu and silk are hand-spun, boiled and overfelted, with hand-sewn finishes of tassels and braiding adding delicate, subtle details to the density and softness of the finished collection.
