THE MAKING OF NOMAD NATURALS BOILED SCARF

This intensely soft, oversized Nomad Naturals Boiled Scarf features a striking asymmetrical, multi-toned design. It is woven from a unique combination of natural grey and dark brown khullu in the weft, and natural light brown and dark brown khullu in the warp. The finished fabric is boiled for added density and a fleece-like touch. The khullu used to make this scarf is exceptionally rare, as only one in every thousand yak possesses a golden brown coat.

This scarf was made using the khullu of 4 yak. Khullu is the ultra-fine, downy undercoat that keeps yak insulated during harsh Tibetan winters. Each summer, the yak naturally shed this down, which is then carefully collected by hand.

The warp is first prepared by Jigshe Tso, this is a very meticulous and long process that requires concentration.

Once woven, the scarf is labelled and any remaining imperfections are picked out by Gombo Kyi’s hands during final quality control checks.

The finished scarf is then ironed and steamed by Tselo. In total, it takes 15 artisans and 13 processes to make a Nomad Naturals Boiled Scarf.

This 100% yak khullu scarf is specially produced at the Norlha Atelier. “We don’t apply chemicals to make our pieces excessively soft,” says Norlha founder Kim Yeshi. “It’s all about what you can achieve with natural hand-applied processes. When you touch or wear the fabric, people say you can feel a little part of the plateau on you. There’s an honesty to it.”
