HOME SERIES X FIONA GOLFAR

From the atmospheres crafted behind closed doors to the rituals practiced within, the home series invites members of our community to reflect on the meaning of home, in their own words. We hope this series offers our readers a sense of inspiration and groundedness as we bundle up during this wintertime season.

In our latest edition of this series, we welcome Fiona Golfar to dive into this topic from her home in Cornwall. Fiona Golfar is a journalist, serving as Contributing Editor of The House and Garden UK and FT How to Spend It, as well as Co-Founder of The Guinea Pig Podcast.

Can you describe an item in your home which makes you feel particularly cosy or comfortable? Everything in my home is designed to be cozy and comfortable. On all of the sofa’s there are sheepskins and throws brought back from travels to curl up into. Texture is very important to me.

What kinds of heirlooms do you have in your life? Please describe one or two precious items that have remained in your family for generations. My favourite heirlooms are a collection of biscuit tins that I inherited from my father. They were made for Huntley and Palmer biscuit company and date back to Victorian times. Some look like postboxes, some like binocular cases, one is a Carousel that spins around. I have them throughout my house.

What kinds of considerations do you factor in when you’re choosing a special piece of clothing or homeware to invest in? I think about things I buy being timeless. I don’t like the idea of something only lasting a season. Today I put on a coat by Junya Watanabe that I bought In 1993. I buy a lot of ceramics, Cornwall is famous for its potters and all my mugs, tableware and vases are made by local potters.

Can you describe a memory of feeling soothed and warmed in cold weather? I like to wrap myself up in layers in the cold weather. I like things to be light and warm so that I don't feel suffocated when I go for walks.

Where do you turn to find inspiration? I find inspiration in nature. I have lived in Cornwall throughout lockdown, I walk along the cliffs and I am so inspired by the incredible colours of the ferns turning to rust, the sea, silver in the winter light and the palest of green lichen that covers the branches of the trees here.
