Welcoming Spring with our New Collection

A new spring, a new product. Norlha is committed to natural, organic fabrics and artisanal processes. Since our beginnings in 2007, we have worked primarily with yak khullu, which we sourced and processed ourselves. Yak is warm but summer is important, and when we began to conceive a summer collection that extends beyond the scarf or shawl, we were drawn by the qualities of organic cotton. We followed the same route as we had for our yak fiber when sourcing cotton. Our thicker cotton is sourced raw from a village in Shanxi, then handspun, woven and sewn by Norlha’s artisans. The yarn in a single pair of trousers takes one woman four days to spin.

The finer cotton items are handwoven at Norlha from GOTS certified thread originating from Xinjiang Province.

We opted to remain 100% natural and extended this to the dyeing process which is done by our partner Muni, located in a Gansu village south of our Atelier. Muni is unique in China as the only dyeing facility to use 100% locally grown indigo plant to make dyes based on its own, natural and organic, formula, whereas nowadays, most mix their natural indigo with up to 80% chemical indigo. Each batch takes up to two months to prepare and the fabric for this a pair of trousers was dyed six times over six days, each time adding a new layer of indigo.
